BMKG Predicts Rob Flood In Parts Of Java To Last Until May 25

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the tides and coastal flood conditions (rob) in parts of northern West Java, Central Java and East Java can last until May 25, 2022.

"Coastal flooding has started to occur since May 14, 2022, this potential for coastal flooding can occur

until May 25, 2022," said Head of the Center for Maritime Meteorology, BMKG, Eko Prasetyo in a written statement received in Jakarta, Tuesday, May 24.

He added, since May 13, 2022, the BMKG has released information on potential coastal flooding in several parts of Indonesia along with the full moon phase and perigee conditions (closest distance from the moon to the earth).

He mentioned that coastal flooding conditions occurred on the coast of Tegal Beach, Wonokerto-Pekalongan, Sari-Pekalongan Beach, Batang Beach, Tawang Kendal Beach.

Similar conditions also occurred at Tanjung Emas Port, Semarang, Jalan Raya Genuk Semarang-Demak, Karang Tengah Beach, Demak, Rembang Beach, and the coast of East Java.

"In addition to rainfall factors in several areas, high waves in the Java Sea reaching 1.25 - 2.5 meters also have an impact on increasing tidal flooding in the region.

"The height of coastal flooding is different in each region. However, this condition in general can interfere with the daily activities of people around the port and coast, such as loading and unloading activities at ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt pond activities and inland fisheries," he said.

He conveyed that the community was advised to prepare mitigation and adaptation efforts to anticipate the impact of coastal flooding and pay attention to maritime weather information updates from the BMKG.

Previously, the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati said that BMKG applies the Preventive Maintenance paradigm in maintaining the quality of meteorological, climatological, and geophysical data and information products.

This step was taken because BMKG did not want to be "missed" by natural disasters.

"Not only the addition of instruments, but the maintenance of all operational equipment is also the BMKG's main priority, especially with regard to the early warning system," he said.
