Jellyfish Fill Probolinggo Beach Area

PROBOLINGGO - Swarms of jellyfish have filled the coastal area of Probolinggo Regency, East Java, in recent weeks.

"It's actually not normal, because the peak of jellyfish appearances usually occurs around October and November, but since last April they have appeared", said Head of the Capture Fisheries Division of the Probolinggo Regency Fisheries Service, Hari Pur Sulistiono, as quoted by Antara, Saturday, May 14.

According to him, jellyfish usually appear in coastal areas when there is a change in seawater temperature and changes in seasons.

"The types of jellyfish that usually appear in the waters of Probolinggo Regency are very diverse, ranging from reddish, bluish, and whitish in color. On average they appear on the edge of the water, on the beach", he said.

Hari urges residents who are active in coastal areas to avoid jellyfish because they can cause itching if they come into contact with the skin.

He said jellyfish are fishery commodities.

"This jellyfish has very high water and collagen content. Collagen is a type of protein that plays an important role in tissue structure, including tendons, skin, and bones. However, because it is poisonous, it must be processed first", he said.

Hari explained that the arrival of jellyfish in the waters of Probolinggo is usually followed by the appearance of a spotted shark.

"The current position of the leopard shark is in the northern waters of Pajarakan, but there are not many of them and will move eastward", he said.
