UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Dies: Egyptian Leader To Former Lebanese PM Conveys Condolences

JAKARTA - A number of world leaders expressed their condolences for the death of the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was also ruler of Abu Dhabi, on Friday.

The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced the death of Sheikh Khalifa on Friday at the age of 73. The government declared a 40-day period of mourning for the President, who has led the UAE since the death of Founding Father Sheikh Zayed in 2004.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi expressed his deep sorrow and sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Khalifa.

"I mourn with heartfelt sorrow and grief a most precious man, and one of the greatest leaders, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, who passed away after a long journey of giving," he said in a statement on his official social media account, citing The National News May 13.

"He has given so much to his country and people, so that the UAE becomes a model of development and modernity in our region and the world," continued President El Sisi.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi also expressed his condolences, saying "we are confident that the pioneering path taken by the late great man, will continue with the efforts of his country's leadership and people".

Sheikh Khalifa died after "a life of giving and giving in the service of his people, his homeland and the Arab and Islamic nation", GCC Secretary General Nayef Al Hajraf said in a message to Emirati leaders and people.

"We ask God Almighty for his prayers and condolences to the leadership and people of the United Arab Emirates and the entire Arab nation, may God have mercy on the President of the State, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, and place him in his vast paradise," Lebanese Interior Minister Bassam Mawlali wrote in a statement. "Today, the Arab nation lost one of its most prominent people, the late President of the United Arab Emirates," said former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

Omani authorities also expressed their condolences for the death of Sheikh Khalifa in a post on Twitter.

"Farewell, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the Garden of Eternity," the Omani Authority wrote.

As previously reported, the sad news came from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan who was also the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, passed away on Friday 13 May, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced.

"The Ministry of Presidential Affairs offers condolences to the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic nations and the world on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE," the state news agency Wam said in a statement, as reported by the Khaleej Times May 13.

Born on 7 September 1948, Sheikh Khalifa is the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He is the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed bil Sultan Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has served as president of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi since 3 November 2004. He was elected to succeed his father who served as the first president of the UAE, from union in 1971 until his death on 2 November 2004.
