Menkum HAM: Political Parties With Legality Can Register As Election Contestants

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkum HAM) and the General Election Commission (KPU) have agreed that political parties (parties) that will register to take part in the election must be registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

This agreement was taken during the hearing of the Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna H. Laoly with the KPU commissioner in the meeting room of the Kemenkum HAM office, Jalan Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, Friday, May 13.

Yasonna said that the ratification of political parties was the authority of his institution. Thus, only political parties registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights have legal force.

"Political parties have legality if they are registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. With this legality, they can register to participate in the election," Yasonna said in a written statement, Friday, May 13.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights, continued Yasonna, will certainly support the KPU in providing political party data for the smooth implementation of the 2024 election later.

This was conveyed in response to the statement of KPU chairman Hasyim Asyari. In the meeting, Hasyim said that his institution needed cooperation from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights regarding political party data.

This political party data will be the basis for the registration and determination of the political parties participating in the election. "We ask the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to provide data on the names and numbers of political parties that have been legally registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights," said Hasyim.

In addition, this data is also needed because there are many changes from political parties. For example, the management and addresses of political parties.

"Currently, there are new parties. Even the old ones have changed management, addresses, and even changed the name of the party," said Hasyim.

In addition to discussing political party data, the meeting also discussed a number of things. Among other things, related to the right to vote for prisoners and detainees as well as harmonization of KPU regulations for the upcoming elections.
