Reminds Actions Don't Bring Impeachment Issues, NasDem: Not Smart Asks President To Resign

JAKARTA - The People's Labor Movement (Gebrak) held another demonstration today. The action, which was held to coincide with the reform momentum, was the culmination of a series of demonstrations in various regions on April 21.

In the previous action, Gebrak unfurled a poster asking the Jokowi-Ma'ruf Amin government to step down.

Responding to the action plan, Member of the NasDem Party faction at the DPR, Irma Suryani Chaniago, reminded the parties involved in the demonstration not to bring up the issue of impeachment against the president. Because according to him, the action is the same as not understanding the state constitution. “It is not smart to ask the President to step down without clear constitutional reasons. Do you understand the law or not?” said Irma in Jakarta, Wednesday, May 12. Irma said demonstrations were guaranteed by the constitution. However, he said, there should be no attempt to impeach the Jokowi government. "Impeachment can only be carried out by parliament for constitutional reasons," he explained.

Therefore, the member of Commission IX of the DPR asked the community elements who wish to express their aspirations to understand the regulations first. If someone urges President Jokowi to step down, said Irma, then the protesters do not understand the existing regulations.

Although, Irma added, expressing opinions or aspirations is a citizen's right guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.

"But don't claim on behalf of all Indonesian people. Demonstrations are indeed the rights of the people, but a group of people cannot act on behalf of the Indonesian people," he said.

Previously, member of the DPR from the Golkar faction, Bambang Patijaya, asked a number of elements of society who would be holding demonstrations not to submit demands for impeachment against President Joko Widodo's government.

Because, according to him, the impeachment demands against the government have no urgency.

"The urgency is in criticizing the implementation of democracy and economic, social, and political development. However, if later in the demonstration there are elements of society who make demands for the impeachment of President Jokowi, I don't think there is any urgency," Bambang told reporters, Wednesday, May 11.
