JAKARTA - Public policy observer Jerry Massie asked the TNI Commander General Andika Perkasa to seriously eradicate the actions of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Papua.

"I think there must be seriousness from the TNI Commander Andika Perkasa. Remember, Papua is also an important part of Indonesia and they are also a contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for our country," Jerry said in a written statement received in Jakarta as quoted by Antara, Wednesday. , May 11th.

Approaches and lobbying are needed so that the situation and conditions in Papua are stable, safe, and conducive. Moreover, he added, when he was sworn in as Commander of the TNI, Andika promised to improve the handling of conflicts in Papua.

According to the Director of Political and Public Policy Studies (P3S), an approach through the cultural aspect can be done and is considered very effective. The Papuan people, he said, are basically good people, so this approach can be carried out through tribal leaders and religious leaders to assist in socialization.

"The importance of entering through a persuasive culture, actually there should be no threats and sporadic actions. Remember, Papuan children are part of the Republic of Indonesia and need to be protected," he said.

Communication and cultural diplomacy must also continue to be put forward, he said. The government must know and understand why there is turmoil and upheaval in Papua.

At least, the central government must know the root of the problem because there is no origin if there is no fire. Basically, many of the Papuans are simply defending their rights and lands, he added.

During January-March 2022, KKB was recorded to have committed seven acts of violence that resulted in the death of 13 people. Finally, last Wednesday, April 17, TNI soldiers at the Quari Atas Kindergarten Post Yonif R 431/SSP Kenyam District succeeded in thwarting the KKB's violent action in Nduga Regency, Papua.

Meanwhile, when he was sworn in as Commander of the TNI, Andika promised to improve the handling of conflicts in Papua, as well as evaluate and change strategies in maintaining the security of the Republic of Indonesia.

"We will definitely fix Papua because I want to use the laws and regulations, so we don't want to take action or take other people's rights," Andika said during the inauguration on November 17, 2021.

He wants TNI soldiers to carry out their duties in Papua just like other regions. Andika also admitted that he had a new concept in dealing with conflict in Papua.

"The details are after I do an evaluation. I already have a concept so that's what I will do," he said.
