West Sumatra Provincial Government Wants To Train Young People To Manage Waste And Make Money

KUBUK BASUNG - The Agam Regency Government stated that independent organic waste processing could be one solution to handle and reduce the volume of waste in the market, one of which is the Padang Luar Market.

"If organic waste is processed properly, the daily volume of waste at the Padang Luar Market which usually reaches 15 tons can be minimized, so that transportation costs to Final Disposal Sites (TPA) can be reduced," said West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi while leading the Provincial Government Ramadan Safari (Pemprov) West Sumatra at the Jami' Nagari Mosque, Padang Lua, Banuhampu District, Agam Regency, Wednesday evening, April 20.

Mahyeldi said that his party will help provide training on waste processing and recycling for the community and traders in Padang Lua. he said, quoted by Antara.

According to him, this can be a sustainable solution that is not only environmentally friendly, but also provides added value for residents. "Later, the results of the processing will be divided into three, namely organic fertilizer, animal feed, and media for cultivating magot. So, it will not be wasted," he said.

In addition to training, assistance in the form of a garbage chopper will also be provided so that waste management does not stop only until training, but continues until implementation.

"This later, with PMD and the Environment, we will train and help with the tools. We will help the enumerator, so that later the three products can be realized," he said.

In order to convince residents, he shared the success story of magot cultivation in Kampar, Riau, which was initiated by former Kampar Regent Jefry Noer.

He said that magot which is cultivated in a room of approximately 10 x 10 meters using media processed from organic waste in Kampar gives yields of up to Rp. 2.4 million per day. "That's just one layer in a room of ten by ten. It can still be made into four to five layers. Imagine if five layers, it means more than Rp. 10 million a day," he said.

Meanwhile, Wali Nagari Padang Lua Edison said there were two main obstacles faced in the Nagari, namely waste management and transportation and traffic flow around Nagari Padang Lua.

"The waste from the Padang Lua Market is usually transported to the Payakumbuh Regional TPA with a distance of about 40 kilometers. The cost is quite large. Sometimes there are disturbances at the TPA, so it is temporarily closed, finally the delivery of waste from Padang Lua is hampered. As a result, for 3 days the garbage has piled up.
