SURABAYA - Mayor of Surabaya Eri Cahyadi asked traders who have occupied the Pasar Turi Baru booth in Surabaya to immediately hold their wares ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.

"Thus, the public can come and shop at Pasar Turi Baru for their Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr needs, as in its heyday before the fire incident 15 years ago," said Mayor Eri Cahyadi in Surabaya as reported by Antara, Thursday, March 31.

It is known that there are a total of 3,780 booths available at Pasar Turi Baru. Meanwhile, there are currently around 2,700 registered traders occupying each booth.

Pasar Turi, which is said to be known as the largest shopping and wholesale center in eastern Indonesia, has experienced several fires. The last time it caught fire was in 2012 and since then the traders have been selling in temporary shelters (TPS) provided by the Surabaya City Government.

On Monday, March 21, the Surabaya City Government officially opened the Pasar Turi Baru with an estimated asset value of around Rp. 1.56 trillion. This opening is expected to restore the glory of the legendary trading center which once had a turnover of up to IDR 15 billion per day.

Meanwhile, the soft opening of Pasar Turi Baru was only held on Wednesday (30/3). Present at the soft opening were the Mayor of Surabaya Eri Cahyadi, the Surabaya City Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) along with representatives of traders and managers or investors. The opening was also witnessed by the Director of Region III Coordination and Supervision, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Brigadier General Bahtiar Ujang Purnama.

"Alhamdulillah, all fellow traders who are at the TPS have also entered Turi Baru Market. God willing, before Ramadan arrives there will be income for traders and people can shop at Turi Baru Market," he said.

Meanwhile, General Manager of Pasar Turi Baru (PTB) Teddy Supriyadi expressed his gratitude and respect to Mayor Eri Cahyadi. Because, he said, without his support, it would be impossible for Pasar Turi Baru to operate again.

"The city government is very supportive so that the turi market can immediately operate again. All relevant agencies are helping to accelerate the turi market so that the turi market can resume operations," said Teddy.
