AMBON - Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Ambon City held a disaster preparedness management training for community groups around watersheds.

Ambon City Secretary, Agus Ririmasse said, the training entitled Flood Management in Selected River Basin (FMSRB) was to support the government and the community in implementing flood disaster mitigation.

He said this activity leads to a paradigm shift in activities oriented to flood control projects which include structural methods to an integrated flood management process orientation.

"That provides an appropriate mix of non-structural interventions," said Agus, Thursday, March 31, as reported by Antara.

In addition, capacity building and institutions, as well as construction activities to mitigate the negative impacts of floods and landslides, so that residents in floodplain areas will become the main beneficiaries by placing communities and institutions as assets and partners in the development process.

"As well as providing control of decisions and resources through community groups and empowered through partnerships with various elements of stakeholders including the Central Government, Ambon City Government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and Universities," he said.

He explained that the floods and landslides that occurred in various areas in Ambon City, not only damaged residential areas, but also disrupted community activities and the economic system in the affected areas.

For this reason, we need a handling strategy with the right approach to minimize the impact caused by the destructive power of water.

Responding to these needs, community-based disaster risk reduction becomes an approach that is considered the most appropriate to be implemented in the management training of disaster preparedness community groups.

He added that it was realized that the community's ability to mitigate floods and landslides was still weak, thus, it is hoped that the community's capacity to increase the community's ability to carry out training activities for the management of the Disaster Preparedness Community Group.

2022, continued the Secretary of the City Council, is the last year of implementing the FMSRB program which has implications for disaster preparedness community groups to continue to empower their groups in efforts to reduce disaster risk in their respective regions.

With assistance provided by the village, state and urban village, so that the sustainability of flood and landslide risk management in five river areas in the center of Ambon City continues to be improved.
