JEMBER - Heavy rains that have hit Jember over the past few days have caused the roof of the local Manpower Office (Disnaker) to collapse. There were no casualties in the incident.
"The collapse of the roof of the hall commonly used for the meeting occurred on Sunday [27 March] night, so that only a few items in the hall were damaged," said Jember Manpower Office Head Bambang Rudianto in the local district, Monday 28 March.
According to him, the hall was used for meeting and training activities, so that some of the items in the hall were damaged by falling debris such as a set of sound systems, tables and chairs, a podium, a coffee processing machine (roasting) and air conditioning.
"In the hall, there are four coffee processing machines made by people with disabilities. Two were rescued, but the rest may have been damaged by falling debris from buildings," he said, as reported by Antara.
He said that his party still had not calculated the total loss due to the collapse of the roof of the hall because they were still cleaning up the debris of the hall building.
"The cause of the collapse of the roof of the hall building is suspected to be because one side of the building's foundation was eroded by the river current. There is a river behind the hall, so a slab needs to be made to support the building," he said.
Bambang said that usually the night guards rest around the hall, but at that time they moved to a room near the prayer room because they had heard signs that something was going to happen to the hall building.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Heru Widagdo, said that moderate to heavy rains resulted in an increase in water discharge in the irrigation canal located behind the Jember Manpower Office hall which caused the building to collapse.
"On Sunday [27 March] at 18.15 WIB, there was a landslide in a retaining wall in the Manpower Office hall and the impact of the landslide on the retaining wall caused the roof of the hall to collapse," he said.
He explained that a roof of the Jember Manpower Office hall measuring 7 X 5 meters had collapsed and was heavily damaged, but there were no casualties in the incident.
