KUPANG - The Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorology Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that sea waves as high as 2.5 meters had the chance to hit two water points in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in the next few days.

"Waves up to 2.5 meters high have the potential to occur in the southern Sawu Sea and northern waters of Kupang-Rote," said the Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Station, Syaeful Hadi, in Kupang, Antara, Friday, March 18.

He said this was related to the early warning of high waves in NTT during March 18-19, 2022. Syaeful explained that the potential for waves with a height of 1.25-2.5 meters was a high risk to the safety of fishing boats and barges.

"Therefore, fishermen and ship operators who want to sail past these two water points must be more vigilant," he said.

Syaful said apart from that, the potential for waves as high as 4-5 meters is also likely to occur in the Indian Ocean south of Sumba-Sabu.

This condition, he said, has a high risk of shipping large ships such as cargo ships, cruise ships.

Regarding the potential for strong winds, Syaeful explained that the wind pattern in the southern part of Indonesia moves from Southeast to Southwest with wind speeds of 5-20 knots.

The highest wind speed, he said, was also observed in a number of areas, including the Savu Sea and Kupang-Rote waters.

"Wind speeds of more than 15 knots or 16 knots are also a high risk for fishing boats and barges," he said.
