YOGYAKARTA - The Department of Industry and Trade (Disperindag) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta has poured approximately 24 tons of cooking oil for market operations in the area.

The Head of Domestic Trade at the DIY Industry and Trade Department Yanto Apriyanto said the operation of the cooking oil market will start on February 25, 2022 in Yogyakarta City and Gunung Kidul.

"We are trying to continue (market operations) working with distributors to accelerate the distribution of (cooking oil) to consumers," he said when contacted in Yogyakarta, Antara, Wednesday, March 2.

In Yogyakarta City, cooking oil market operations (OP) have been held with Perum Bulog DIY in Wirobrajan and Mantrijeron Subdistricts, while in Gunung Kidul it was held in Panggang District, Tepus District, and specifically for MSMEs in Bulog Warehouse, Wonosari District.

He targets the OP of cooking oil to reach other districts in DIY so that the selling price in traditional markets can be reduced according to the highest retail price (HET). "Later, Bantul will follow. We will prioritize remote areas first," he said.

Referring to the Minister of Trade Regulation Number 6/2022, the HET for cooking oil is regulated with details of bulk cooking oil at Rp11,500 per liter, simple packaging at Rp13,500 per liter, and premium packaging at Rp14,000 per liter.

However, based on the monitoring of the DIY Industry and Trade Department, the average price of cooking oil in traditional markets is still selling at an average price of IDR 18,000 to IDR 19,000 per liter.

"In traditional markets (prices) are still fluctuating, but in modern shops there are no problems, the prices are in accordance with the Minister of Trade Regulation," said Yanto.

He said that the high selling price and the disruption in the supply of cooking oil in DIY were caused by panic buying or wholesale action by consumers for fear of missing the goods and the practice of speculation by impromptu cooking oil sellers.

Based on the results of monitoring held with the Yogyakarta Regional Police's Food Task Force, he confirmed that the limited supply of cooking oil in DIY was not caused by hoarding practices.

If the purchase of cooking oil is reasonable, he believes the supply that has been disbursed so far is sufficient for the average needs of the people in DIY.

"The wholesale system and the presence of speculators have disrupted supply. Actually, a reasonable purchase is sufficient (to meet the needs of the DIY community)," said Yanto.
