KPAI Worries That Child Violence During The Pandemic Will Be Imitated When They Grow Up

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) revealed that child abuse committed by parents during the pandemic is quite alarming. This is reflected in the case of parents persecuting their children because of learning difficulties online.

KPAI commissioner Retno Listyarti reminded that violence perpetrated by parents against children has the potential to cause bad behavior when the child grows up.

"Believe it or not, people who suffered mistreatment or abuse in their childhood, as adults, tend to abuse their own children," said Retno when confirmed by VOI, Wednesday, September 16.

Retno explained that violence experienced by children will make the development of emotional regulation and behavior worse in the future.

In the future, the child loses the ability to calm himself down, cannot avoid provocative events, and finds it difficult to refrain from abusive behavior. It is driven by uncontrollable emotions.

"The rude attitude and inability to control emotions shown by the parents will be transmitted to the children through interactions. Children tend to imitate the attitudes of the parents they see," said Retno.

Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Retno considered financial problems easily making parents feel that their children were a burden to them. Parents are potentially vulnerable to abuse their children.

Therefore, Retno asked parents to try not to mix children's affairs with the problem at hand.

"It should be remembered that the existing problems will not be resolved by simply violence against children. This will only add to the existing problem," he explained.

Recently, there was a case of abuse by a mother named Lia Handayani (26) to her son, KS, who was eight years old. Lia abused her because she was annoyed when she saw that her child had difficulty learning online.

This incident occurred on August 26 morning, around 09.00 WIB. Initially, Lia pinched and hit her more than five times using the broom handle until KS fell to the floor.

Some time later, Lia's husband, Imam Safi'e, returned home and was shocked to see that KS was weak. Lia panicked and took Imam out of the house, along with KS's twins, with the aim of getting fresh air and taking KS to the hospital.

But unlucky, KS died on the way. Lia and Imam then put KS's body into a box and brought it to their hometown to remove traces of the child's death.

After arriving at their hometown, Lia and Imam buried their children secretly in the public cemetery (TPU) Cipalabuh Village, Cijaku District, Lebak Regency, which is also the grave of their grandmother.

There are residents who suspect that the KS grave mound is still new. After being dismantled, residents found KS's body still wearing his clothes. Residents also reported to the police.

On Sunday, September 13, Lia and Imam were arrested at their new leasehold in Jakarta. Meanwhile, KS's late twin brother was entrusted to the care of his brother.
