JAKARTA – 'Indonesia will not progress without advanced universities, don't reverse it'. This sentence was conveyed by the Secretary General of the PDI-P Hasto Kristiyanto while giving a public lecture at Syiah Kuala University (USK), Banda Aceh. Hasto said, universities must be the infrastructure for the progress of the Indonesian nation.

"President Soekarno's message that universities are cities of intellect or universities must be the infrastructure for the progress of the Indonesian nation. Indonesia will not progress without advanced universities, don't reverse it," said Hasto, quoted from Antara, Sunday, February 27.

"Bung Karno always reminded Indonesian youth, including Syiah Kuala University students to put, formulate, place your goals as high as the sky. Because if you fall, you fall among the stars in the sky," he continued.

For information, USK is a campus that has a close relationship with President Soekarno. On September 2, 1959, Bung Karno inaugurated the Tugu Darussalam and opened the first Faculty of USK, the Faculty of Economics.

Hasto also said that universities must be the center of progress in mastering science and technology which is rooted in what Indonesia has. Thus, research should be encouraged to demonstrate its capabilities as an independent nation.

He gave an example of how mastery of science and technology must be based on Pancasila. Hasto reminded the Indonesian people not to be easily influenced by outside information.

"Understanding Pancasila, let alone talking about revitalization, can only be done if we dismantle our mentality. The colonized mentality, the submissive mentality that is easily influenced by outside theories, for us to develop our own theory based on the conditions of the Indonesian people, culture and geographical conditions of the nation, and the resources owned by the Indonesian people, that is the task of universities," he explained.
