Perindo: Cak Imin's Suggestion That The 2024 Election Be Postponed Cannot Happen, Jokowi Is Firmly Not Interested In 3 Periods

JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Indonesian Unity Party (Perindo) Ahmad Rofiq highlighted the statement by the Chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin who proposed that the 2024 General Election be postponed for another 1-2 years.

Rofiq assessed that the 2024 General Election could not be postponed, because in a meeting of non-parliamentary political parties with President Joko Widodo, the Head of State conveyed that he was not interested in extending his term of office for up to 3 terms.

"Cak Imin's statement is impossible, because when the president met a non-parliamentary party, at that time I was present in person and heard the president's statement firmly stating that I was not at all interested in extending or increasing the President's term of office to 3 terms," he said, quoted by Antara, Friday, February 25th.

According to him, President Jokowi conveyed this in a meeting with the General Chairs and the Secretary General of the non-parliamentary coalition political parties at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, September 1, 2021.

According to Rofiq, President Jokowi's refusal to increase his term of office to 3 terms is certainly wise.

President Joko Widodo's attitude, he said, was also a form of providing opportunities for future generations to become presidential candidates in the 2024 election.

"I think Pak Jokowi's firmness in refusing to increase the period and term of office is very wise. He does not want to set a bad example for future generations. This shows the president is a true democrat," said Rofiq.

Previously, according to him, on February 23, 2022 the General Chairperson of the PKB who is also the Deputy Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Cak Imin, proposed that the 2024 General Election be postponed for the next one to two years.

At that time, Muhaimin Iskandar conveyed the goal of delaying one or two years so that the momentum for economic improvement would not be lost, and then there would be no freeze to replace the two-year stagnation during the pandemic.
