Needdem Regrets Only 2 Women In The Elected Composition Of KPU-Bawaslu Members

JAKARTA - The Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) regrets the decision of Commission II of the DPR which has elected 7 KPU members and 5 Bawaslu members for the 2022-2027 term.

The composition of KPU and Bawaslu members, which only have one female member each, is regretted by the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem).

"We deeply regret the DPR's decision to return to maintaining the bad tradition, which is to choose only 1 woman as a member of the KPU and Bawaslu," said Needdem researcher Fadli Ramadhanil in his statement, Thursday, February 17.

In fact, said Fadli, Commission II of the DPR has the opportunity to carry out the mandate of the Election Law to select 30 percent of women from the composition of KPU and Bawaslu members.

"The presence of a female DPR chairperson for the first time also does not have a significant impact on the political attitudes of political parties in parliament, on the fulfillment of women's representation in the KPU and Bawaslu," he said.

Fadli also admitted that he was surprised by the closed election process for KPU and Bawaslu members. In fact, in 2012 and 2017, the public could see firsthand the voting process carried out by Commission II when selecting KPU and Bawaslu members.

"Early in the morning, the election was held behind closed doors which the public could not witness. So the question was how the method of determining the ranking was made, what was the basis for determining the ranking. In fact, the names chosen were the same as the names that circulated through chain messages before FPT started," he said.

In fact, he said, the 2024 election has very tough and complex challenges. One of them is facing the crush of the stages of the General Election and Pilkada. This has to be regulated and designed in such a way by the new election organizers.

"Elected election organizers must design effective, rational, and transparent election management. So that the implementation of elections and local elections remains within the corridor of democratic values and integrity," he added.

For information, Commission II of the DPR has determined the elected members of the KPU and Bawaslu for the 2022-2027 period. The seven elected KPU members are Betty Epsilon Idroos, Hasyim Asy'ari, Mochammad Afifuddin, Parsadaan Harahap, Yulianto Sudrajat, Idham Holik and August Mellaz.

Meanwhile, the five Bawaslu members are Lolly Suhenty, Puadi, Rahmat Bagja, Totok Haryono and Herwyn Jefler Hielsa Malonda.

Furthermore, the 12 names will be brought to the DPR Plenary Meeting on Friday, February 19, tomorrow and handed over to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to be inaugurated as members of the KPU-Bawaslu RI for the 2022-2027 period.
