Police Remain Firm, Handling Of Edy Mulyadi Case Is In Accordance With Rules

JAKARTA - The National Police stated that in handling the case of alleged hate speech with the suspect Edy Mulyadi, they had acted in accordance with applicable regulations.

The statement was in response to Edy Mulyadi's attorney, who regretted the detention of his client since January 31, at the Bareskrim at the National Police Headquarters, because the subject matter reported was merely an expression of satire.

"Investigators have carried out the investigation stages in accordance with the procedures and statutory regulations (KUHAP)," said Karo Penmas of the Public Relations Division of the Police Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan to reporters, Tuesday, February 1.

However, Ramadhan was reluctant to comment further on other statements from the attorney for the suspect in the alleged hate speech about Kalimantan, "where the genie throws away children".

On the previous occasion, Edy Mulyadi's attorney, Damai Hari Lubis, regretted the investigator's decision to arrest Edy Mulyadi. The reason is that the subject matter reported is just a satire.

"It is very regretful that EM's detention is due to the alleged violation other than debatable because the object of the case is related to the art space or language of expression or satire, or is a satirical language in an area according to customs and culture or Betawi habits and is not disclosed with dirty or harsh sentences," he said.

Edy Mulyadi has been named a suspect in the alleged hate speech case regarding Kalimantan "where genies throw their children away". In addition, Edy was detained for 20 days.

In this case, Edy Mulyadi is suspected of violating Article 45 a paragraph 2 juncto 28 paragraph (2) of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE). Then, Article 14 paragraphs (1) and (2) of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 15 of Law No. 1 of 1946 concerning criminal law regulations, and Article 156 of the Criminal Code.
