ACEH - The sole judge of the Lhokseumawe District Court, Aceh, rejected the application for lethal injection or euthanasia submitted by a fisherman in the area. The decision to reject the application for lethal injection was read by the sole judge Budi Sunanda at a hearing at the Lhokseumawe District Court, Thursday, January 27.

The death penalty applicant Nazaruddin Razali (59), a resident of Pusong Village, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, did not attend the trial, but was represented by his legal adviser, Safaruddin.

"Rejecting the application for lethal injection submitted by the applicant Nazaruddin Razali, considering and considering that there are no rules or legal basis governing the application," said Budi Sunanda reading out his verdict.

Judge Budi Sunanda said that lethal injection violates human rights because it is an act of taking a person's life and is a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.

"Application for lethal injection or euthanasia is an act that is prohibited in Indonesia and is also prohibited by religion. Therefore, the application for lethal injection submitted by the applicant is rejected," said the judge as quoted by Antara.

Safaruddin, Nazaruddin Razali's legal adviser, said he was still thinking about the single judge's decision to reject his client's application for lethal injection.

"After this, we will first consult with the applicant and the community of the Pusong Lhokseumawe Reservoir for further legal efforts," he said.

Safaruddin said his party was given 14 days to determine whether to accept the judge's decision or to file an appeal to the Supreme Court.

According to him, in the verdict, the judge stated that the Pusong Lhokseumawe Reservoir, the applicant's cage fish business site, was contaminated with mercury waste, although it was still within the threshold.

If it is indeed polluted by waste, said Safaruddin, his party regrets the performance of the relevant agencies in the Lhokseumawe City Government who seem to have allowed the reservoir to be polluted with waste.

"It's as if there is omission of reservoir water pollution. If it is true and there is evidence, we will report the service to the police on suspicion of environmental pollution," said Safaruddin.
