SURABAYA - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa asked the Regional Information Broadcasting Commission (KPID) to seriously combat hoaxes and disinformation that are circulating in the community through various social media platforms.

"Hoaxes exist and never stop. Especially in this era of digital transformation, their spread is very fast," she said on the sidelines of inaugurating and taking the oath of office as commissioner of the East Java KPID for the period 2021-2024 at the Grahadi State Building in Surabaya, as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, January 25.

Khofifah also hopes that the East Java KPID can become an institution that helps mediate information that develops in the community, both positive and negative impacts.

"Because fake news and disinformation are dangerous phenomena in society," said the number one person in the East Java Provincial Government.

In addition, the challenge of KPID is currently getting tougher because it does not only supervise the broadcast content of conventional media but also broadcast media based on social media.

"For example, YouTube. On this platform, everyone, personally, is free to create content. Many are positive, but not a few are negative and cause unrest in the community," she said.

"This is where the KPID plays an important role. Let's push the pluses and minuses. Expand programs that can educate the public," continued Khofifah.

The inauguration and oath of office were taken based on the Decree of the Governor of East Java Number 188/898/KPTS/013/2021 dated December 17, 2021, regarding the Appointment of Members of the East Java KPID for the 2021-2024 term.

The seven commissioners appointed were Romel Masykuri, Royin Fauziana, Dian Ika Riani, A. Afif Amrullah, Immanuel Yosua Tjiptosoewarno, Sundari, and Habib M. Rohan.

Meanwhile, the Head of the East Java KPID Member Selection Committee, Prof. Akhmad Muzakki conveyed that the main task of the East Java KPID is to maintain peace and social harmony in the community through information monitoring.

"Our public space is very fragmented, so the role of KPID is very important to maintain peace and a sense of nationality in the public space," he said.
