North Halmahera Earthquake, 198 Houses And Public Facilities Damaged

TERNATE - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of North Halmahera (Halut) Regency reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 damaged 198 houses and nine units of public facilities.

"As of tonight, based on reports of houses affected by the earthquake in Halut, 198 houses were damaged and nine public facilities," said Head of Emergency and Logistics for the Halut Regency BPBD, Heni Toga, quoted by Antara, Monday, January 10.

The earthquake in North Halmahera caused a number of houses and public facilities to be damaged including West Tobelo District, Kusuri Village, Wangongira Village, West Kao District, Soamaetek Village, Pitago Village, Kai Village, Bailengit Village, Soa Hukum Village, Tuguis Village, Beringin Agung Village and Parseba Village. As a result of the earthquake, two people were injured, namely a broken bone and a victim suffered minor injuries. He detailed that 134 houses were lightly damaged, 60 houses were moderately damaged, four houses were heavily damaged, eight houses of worship were moderately damaged and one unit of the Kusuri Village Office was slightly damaged with material losses still being recorded.

Previously, an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 rocked North Halmahera (Halut) Regency, North Maluku, on Monday, January 10 at 06.59 WIT with the location of the earthquake at 1.49 North Latitude, 127. 85 east longitude or 5 kilometers southwest of Tobelo. The head of the Ternate Class III Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Andri Wijaya, stated that the earthquake with a depth of 10 km had no potential for a tsunami. This earthquake was felt by residents in Tobelo City, Galela and surrounding areas in North Halmahera Regency with four MMI vibrations, while Sofifi City and Ternate City were felt III MMI, the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

The head of the Ternate BMKG appealed to the people in Halut district to remain calm and not panic. In the event of an earthquake, immediately self-evacuate.
