PALU - The Palu City Government, Central Sulawesi, provides boat assistance to fishermen as an effort to increase the catch of fishermen.

"This year, we gave approximately 200 boats to Palu Bay fishermen as a form of government concern for coastal communities," said Palu Mayor Hadianto Rasyid in Palu, Antara, Monday, January 10.

The plan is to provide support for fishing activities for fishermen in stages until 2024 as many as 1,000 boats as a political promise in the 2020 Pilkada.

According to him, the marine and fisheries sector is a sector that can help improve the regional economy. Therefore the local government intervened with assistance in the hope of increasing catches which could also trigger their economic recovery.

"In the midst of a pandemic like today, many sectors are affected, especially the essential sectors, I hope that with the help of boats, fishermen's lives can be better than before," said Hadianto.

According to him, although Palu only has a small bay, coastal communities/fishers can still survive on their catch.

"There are still many Palu fishermen who use traditional equipment as well as fishing and fishing techniques. I really appreciate the fishermen, even though Palu was hit by an earthquake, tsunami and liquefaction in 2018, but they can still survive and quickly rise from adversity at that time," said Hadianto .

Therefore, in order to improve the living standards of the fishing community, the Palu City Government also hopes for the support of other parties to help from various aspects, whether empowerment or equipment assistance.

Palu fishermen have also received converter kit assistance from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) as a fuel oil (BBM) conversion program using 300 units of 3-kilogram LPG.

"Hopefully with the help of the boat later, fishermen will be more productive in catching fish," said Hadianto.
