JAKARTA - Myanmar's military regime has sentenced the former bodyguard of State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to three years in prison, her lawyer said.

Cherry Htet, a 30-year-old Myanmar Police second lieutenant, was charged with violating police regulations for her social media posts supporting the ousted leader. She was sentenced on December 30.

"The police court sentenced him to three years and sent him to Yamethin Prison on the same day," lawyer U Myint Thwin told The Irrawaddy as quoted on January 5, adding she was unable to attend the sentencing in Myanmar's capital, Naypyitaw.

Suu Kyi's former bodyguard has been held in Naypyitaw Prison since September 23, 2021, after being first brought under surveillance following the February 2021 junta coup and then being held under house arrest in a building behind the special police branch office in Naypyitaw.

She was sent to Yamethin Prison in the Mandalay Region, because Naypyitaw prison does not hold prisoners serving sentences of three years or more. She also faces sedition charges, which carry a prison sentence of up to three years.

On March 14, 2021, Cherry Htet was accused of posting, "We miss you Amay (mother)", using the popular Myanmar term for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. She also allegedly posted another message on March 6 that said: "If you don't dare to be outspoken about justice, shut up and don't say there is justice."

The former bodyguard is also accused of communicating with National League for Democracy MPs, as well as receiving information about the civilian National Unity Government (NUG).

Separately, citing Progressive Voice Myanmar, Cherry Htet is said to have served on Suu Kyi's personal security team during her overseas and domestic trips. She served for the Special Branch of the Anti-Terrorism Department. Her commander, Police Captain Zaw Win Tun, is the plaintiff in her case. Junta troops confiscated Cherry Htet's telephone and computer on September 14.

Suu Kyi's closeness with Cherry Htet is illustrated in her Facebook post, when the Myanmar leader gave her a necklace that she reportedly designed herself as a birthday present.

Last July, Ko Zaw Naing Win, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's aide and deputy director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was sentenced to seven years in prison for violating the trust of a civil servant by joining the Civil Disobedience Movement against the junta.
