Jokowi Wants The TPKS Bill To Be Passed Immediately: Sexual Violence Against Women Must Be Addressed Immediately

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) wants the Draft Law (RUU) for the Criminal Act of Sexual Violence (TPKS) to be ratified by the DPR immediately. Moreover, the draft law has been in the process since 2016 but has not yet been ratified into law.

"I have closely watched the Sexual Violence Bill, since it was in the process of being formed in 2016 until now, it is still being processed in the DPR," Jokowi said in a video description posted on the State Secretariat's YouTube, Tuesday, January 3.

Jokowi emphasized that this legislation needs to be immediately ratified by members of parliament in Senayan to provide protection for victims of sexual violence.

"Especially sexual violence against women that urgently must be addressed immediately," he asserted.

In an effort to speed up the ratification of the bill, Jokowi then ordered the Minister of Law and Security (Menkumham) Yasonna Laoly together with the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati to sit with the DPR.

The goal is that the two ministers can carry out further communication and coordination in order to speed up the ratification of the TPKS Bill.

"I ordered the Menkumham and the Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection to immediately coordinate and consult with the DPR in the discussion of the TPKS Bill. So that there are accelerated steps," said Jokowi.

Not only that, Jokowi also ordered the government task force to handle the TPKS Bill to immediately prepare a problem inventory list (DIM) for the draft that is being prepared by the DPR.

"So that the joint discussion process will more quickly get to the main points of substance to provide legal certainty and guarantee protection for victims of sexual violence," he said.

With this step, he hopes that legislators can immediately ratify the TPKS Bill into law. "So that it can provide maximum protection for victims of sexual violence in the country," concluded Jokowi.
