JAYAPURA - The Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region V Jayapura predicts that the northern region of Papua will be hit by light to heavy rains this week.

Head of BBMKG Region V Jayapura Cahyo Nugroho said the northern part of Papua that is predicted to be hit by light to heavy rain includes Supiori, Biak, Yapen Islands, Nabire, Waropen, Mamberamo Raya, Sarmi, Keerom, Kota and Jayapura Regencies.

"The northern part of Papua is predicted to be hit by light to heavy rains from January 3-5, 2022," he said in a press release in Jayapura, as reported by Antara, Monday, January 3.

He said that light to moderate rain in the northern part of Papua is also expected to occur on January 6-9 2022. In addition, it is predicted that a number of water areas in Papua will experience waves of 0.25-1.25 meters, 1 .25-2.50 meters and 2.50-4.0 meters over the next week.

"The North Pacific Ocean of Biak, the Arafuru Sea to the east and east of the Aru Islands and south of Merauke which have the potential for waves of 2.50-4.0 meters where the wind in the Papua region generally blows from the West-North with wind speeds ranging from 5-30 km. per hour," he said again.

He added that his party also appealed to the public to increase awareness of the potential for hydrometeorological disasters in the event of heavy rains and strong winds.
