JAKARTA - A gunman was arrested after infiltrating the grounds of Windsor Castle, England while Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles were celebrating Christmas there, police said.

Officers from Thames Valley and the Metropolitan Police were called in to commit the security breach at around 8:30 am in the grounds of Windsor Castle. A 19-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested and detained.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated Christmas at Windsor Castle this year, after canceling traditional plans to go to Sandringham Palace.

"Investigations are ongoing following this incident and we are working with colleagues from the Metropolitan police," said Inspector Rebecca Mears of Thames Valley Police, citing Sky News Dec. 25.

"The man has been arrested on suspicion of trespassing or violating a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody at this time."

"We can confirm that the security process was triggered within moments of the man entering the grounds and he did not enter any building. Members of the Royal Family have been notified of the incident. We do not believe there is a wider danger to the public."

Today, members of the Royal Family pose for a photo at Windsor Castle as they attend a service at St. Chapel. George, before spending Christmas Day with Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince Charles and Camilla joined the chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, along with the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Camilla wore a blue and turquoise plaid jacket and matching hat, and wished the press 'Merry Christmas' as the couple walked into the chapel.

It is understood that the Queen's absence from the service was a personal choice and followed the precautionary approach seen over the past six months.

Meanwhile, Princess Sophie and Prince Edward were accompanied by their daughter Lady Louise and James' son, Viscount Severn.

Separately, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are spending Christmas in Norfolk, where they will be joined by several members of the Middleton family.

It comes as the Queen reflects on her personal year of grief in her annual Christmas Day message this afternoon.

She said there was "one familiar laugh that was missing" when she acknowledged the death of her husband Prince Philip amid the continuing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

She said how her "naughty, curious twinkle was as bright at the end as when I first saw her", as she empathized with the family who lost a loved one this year.

He also spoke fondly of his eldest son, the Prince of Wales, his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, for their focus on climate change.

Last week, a woman was arrested after banging on Prince Andrew's car window and yelling at him as he drove through Windsor during his regular short route from his home at Royal Lodge on the estate to Castle, where he went horseback riding.
