PADANG - Floods occurred in five sub-districts in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra (West Sumatra) due to high rainfall in the local area since Friday morning.

The Head of the South Coast Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Doni Gusrizal, explained that the five points were Tapan, Batang Kapas, Lengayang, Silaut, and Tarusan.

"Floods inundate residential areas with an average height of one to two meters, while inside people's houses it reaches half a meter," said Doni Gusrizal, quoted by Antara, Friday, December 17.

He said that as of 19.30 WIB the team was still at the location to provide assistance and evacuation, while the rain was still pouring down the local area.

"So until tonight our focus is on rescuing and evacuating residents who need evacuation," he said.

Doni said the BPBD together with local disaster personnel continued to make extra efforts and divided the focus of handling, considering that the distance from one flood point to another was quite far.

"Since this afternoon, we have evacuated more than 100 residents to safe places, the main focus is to save the residents," he said.

Meanwhile, BPBD also recorded three landslide points that occurred around 16.00 WIB, namely in Luwung, Bayang District, Batang Kapas, and Bukit Pulai.

"Cleaning up landslide materials is still being carried out until tonight using heavy equipment from the district and provincial governments," he said.

Doni said the landslide closed access to the national road connecting West Sumatra and Bengkulu.
