SEMARANG - The Semarang Police, Central Java team thwarted the shipment of 8.4 kg of methamphetamine from Kalimantan to Semarang City by sea.
Central Java Police Chief Inspector General Ahmad Luthfi said one suspect who was a courier for 8.4 kg of crystal methamphetamine was arrested while hiding at his boarding house in Sayung, Demak Regency.
According to him, the disclosure of the case began when the owner of one of the trucks traveling from Kalimantan to Semarang using KM Dharma Kartika VII reported to the police about suspicious items in the back of his truck.
The Regional Police Chief said that during a joint inspection with the police, it was discovered that the package contained eight packages of methamphetamine weighing 8.4 kg.
Officers then followed up on the findings by examining CCTV footage aboard KM Dharma Kartika VII which rested at Tanjung Emas Port, Semarang, said the Regional Police Chief.
"From the CCTV footage, it can be seen that someone threw something into the back of a truck on a ship that was going to dock at the port," he said.
The regional police chief said that this method was suspected as a new mode of smuggling methamphetamine. "After the truck gets off the ship, it is likely that the truck will be followed by the perpetrators to retrieve the goods," he said.
From tracing the records and manifests of the ship's passengers, he said, the identity of the courier who sent the narcotics was known. The perpetrator is known to be Helianto Kosim (42) a resident of East Kotawaringin, Central Kalimantan.
From the officer's search to his place of residence in Kalimantan, it was discovered that the suspect was hiding in one of the boarding houses in Sayung, Demak Regency.
From the suspect's statement, it is known that the delivery of the illicit goods was an order from a person with the initials S, he said.
The former recidivist in the fraud case admitted that he received a salary of Rp. 20 million for every kg of crystal methamphetamine he managed to send.
For his actions, the suspect was charged with Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
