BMKG Makassar Reminds Residents To Increase Extreme Weather Alert

MAKASSAR - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region IV Makassar again reminds the public to increase their vigilance following predictions that the South Sulawesi region will enter extreme weather with heavy rain accompanied by strong winds for the next two days.

"There has been an increase in Asian monsoon activity which is the main cause. This activity creates wet air masses. So that atmospheric dynamics conditions increase the potential for moderate to heavy rain intensity," said Head of BMKG Region IV Makassar, Darmawan, quoted by Antara, Monday, December 6 .

In addition, this condition also triggers a meeting pattern from the Java Sea to Sulawesi. Thus, increasing sea surface temperature anomalies in the Makassar Strait and Bone Bay.

"It could be that the upcoming heavy rains will be accompanied by strong winds, triggering high waves in a number of waters in the Makassar and Bone straits," he explained.

So far, the weather conditions in South Sulawesi and surrounding areas have entered an extreme period. Considering that several areas have been affected by bad weather since Sunday 5 December 2021 and it is estimated that it will continue until Wednesday 7 December 2021.

"We urge and at the same time remind the public to be aware of this extreme weather and always monitor the development of information from the BMKG," Darmawan advised.

BMKG Region IV Makassar has also issued an early warning about high sea wave conditions that occurred in several areas in South Sulawesi which resulted in tidal flooding. The affected areas are the City of Parepare, the waters of the Makassar spermonde, the waters of the Pangkep spermonde, and the waters of the Selayar Islands.

In Soppeng Regency, flash floods have hit the area, causing two houses and their contents to be swept away by the current. Meanwhile, Makassar and its surrounding areas have been raining for the last two days with moderate and high intensity.
