Underwater Volcanic Eruption Occurs In Lembata Waters

JAKARTA - The Center for Volcanology, Mitigation, Disaster and Geology (PVBMG) reports that there has been an eruption and underwater volcanic eruption in the southern waters around the Ile Werung Volcano complex, Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

"This incident has caused sea levels to rise," said a volcano observer from the Ile Werung Volcano monitoring post, Wilson Wuri Wutun, when contacted from Kupang, Monday, November 29.

This he conveyed was related to the existence of boasting from the seabed which made residents around the location of the boast and the eruption of the mountain worried.

He explained, according to residents' reports, the sea level had risen on Sunday (28/11) night. And on Monday with a sea level of less than one meter and an inundation distance of about 30 meters.

"We (Ile Werung Volcano Monitoring Station, ed) recorded this eruption starting on Sunday (28/11) which started at 21.35 WITA and lasted for one hour," he said.

On Monday (29/11) starting at 05.17 WITA, the eruption and gust activity was recorded again. Until now, the eruption activity is still ongoing but has not shown a significant increase.

His party also said that the results of the field monitoring of the Ile Werung Volcano Observer on Monday (29/11) at 08.29 WITA had observed eruptive smoke as high as approximately 100 meters from sea level accompanied by gibberish.

Visually, this boasting activity did not occur at the location of the underwater volcano Hobal. The location is about one kilometer south of the Hobal Underwater Volcano and is most likely still associated with the activities of the Ile Werung Volcano complex.

Wilson also when contacted asked that the community around Mount Ile Werung be aware of the impact of the eruption and the boasting of the underwater volcano.
