Child Abuse Case, Unej Lecturer Sentenced To 6 Years In Prison

JEMBER - University of Jember (Unej) Lecturer Rahmat Hidayat was sentenced to six years in prison and a fine of IDR 50 million subsidiary to four months in prison by the panel of judges in a child molestation case.

"Declaring that the defendant Rahmat Hidayat has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing a criminal act of committing violence or threats of violence, committing obscene acts as indicted by the two public prosecutors," said Chief Justice Totok Yanuarto in a trial at the Jember District Court, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, November 24. .

The panel of judges conveyed the aggravating thing, namely that the defendant was convoluted when giving testimony at trial and as a lecturer it was not appropriate to do this act.

Meanwhile, the mitigating factor was that the defendant was polite during the trial, had never been convicted and the defendant was the breadwinner of the family.

The verdict of the panel of judges was lighter than the previous demands of the public prosecutor in the trial reading the demands, namely eight years in prison and a fine of IDR 50 million, subsidiary of six months in prison.

Previously, the public prosecutor submitted two alternative charges against the defendant, namely the Law on Child Protection and the Law on the Elimination of Domestic Violence.

Responding to the judge's decision, public prosecutor Adek Sri Sumiarsih said he was still thinking about responding to the judge's verdict and his party still had seven days to determine his position.

Meanwhile, the defendant's legal advisor M. Faiq Assiddiqi expressed his gratitude to the panel of judges, but his party was a bit sad because the prison sentence handed down to his client was quite heavy, namely six years in prison.

"We as legal advisers will provide advice and consideration to our client whether to appeal or not in the judge's decision, so we need to discuss with the defendant and his family first," he said.
