SURABAYA - Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi led the community service to clean waterways in the Jalan Setro area, Gading Village, Tambaksari District, Surabaya City, East Java.

"We are normalizing starting from the other end (Setro Street), only a few meters away, we got four garbage trucks. They contained various bottles, including mud. But it wasn't a lot of mud, in fact, there was a lot of garbage," said Eri Cahyadi, quoted by Antara, Sunday, November 21

The mayor asked residents whose places of business are near waterways to help clean up trash in waterways.

"These residents can do community service so they don't get flooded. Because we saw that the drains had all stopped. So the channel on Street (Setro Baru) is not functioning because it has been covered with garbage," he said.

While leading the cleaning of the waterways, the Mayor noticed that parts of the waterways were permanently closed making it difficult to clean.

Eri Cahyadi instructed the relevant government officials to dismantle the drain cover and repair it.

"So later, I will ask all business premises not to make a big block, make three parts so that they can be removed. If it has been removed, then the residents will clean it themselves, together, it can't be done only by the government," he said.

The mayor also found a ceramic factory in the area of Lebak Jaya I Utara Street building permanent trash can right above the water canal.

Mayor Eri Cahyadi and Police Chief Tambaksari Commissioner of Police Muhammad Akhyar rebuked the factory owner.

The permanent trash can above the water canal was then dismantled and the factory owner was reminded not to throw garbage in the drain area anymore.
