BANDA ACEH - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of North Aceh Regency said 38 gampongs or villages in five sub-districts in the area were hit by floods.
The Acting Head of BPBD for North Aceh Regency, Murzani, said the flood occurred due to the Krueng (River) Keurto levee breaking at three points following heavy rains in the area since the last two days.
"The high intensity of the rain that has occurred in the last two days has caused Krueng Keurto's water flow to increase, causing levees at three points to burst," he said, quoted by Antara, Friday, November 12.
Murzani said the collapse of the embankment caused hundreds of houses in 38 villages spread across six sub-districts around the watershed to be submerged.
A total of 38 villages that were hit by the flood were spread over five sub-districts, namely Lhoksukon District, Matang Kuli District, Pirak Timu District, Cot Girek District, Baktiya Barat District, and Kuta Makmur District.
"The exact number of houses affected by the flood is still being collected. The team is still in the field. However, it is estimated that hundreds of houses were submerged," said Murzani.
In addition to collecting data, the BPBD Team also established refugee camps and public kitchens and placed other disaster management needs.
Murzani said the flood heights ranged from 40 centimeters to one meter. The worst flooding occurred in Matang Kuli District, Lhoksukon District, and Cot Girek District.
"We remind the public to continue to be vigilant because the current weather conditions are very worrying. The BPBD team and other relevant agencies are on standby to help communities affected by disasters," he said.
