DENPASAR - The 22-second video shows a lot of garbage floating in the waters of Kusamba Harbor, Klungkung Regency, Bali.

The video went viral on social media because it saw plastic and organic waste floating and scattered in the waters. The video was uploaded to the Instagram account @aditself19 on Instragram.

Head of the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Management (BPSPL) Denpasar, Bali, Permana Yudiarso said his party was still checking.

"If we look at the video, the location is on Kusamba Beach. We will try to check it," said Yudiarso, when contacted, Tuesday, November 9.

The emergence of these wastes is said to be influenced by two factors. First, the source of the garbage comes from the mainland or the islands around the place and secondly there is a current pattern that carries the garbage to the sea.

"The current pattern is what eventually brings the garbage from river mouths, ditches, and sewers. Then to the sea, which is driven by currents," added Yudiarso.

According to him, the phenomenon of garbage in the sea is also due to the rainy season. During the rainy season, garbage from land that enters rivers or waterways will be carried to the sea.

"So based on the results of research from many experts in Bali itself, 50 to 60 percent of the waste that enters the sea from the mainland of Bali itself or the islands around it," he explained.

His party said various types of waste ranging from plastic to organic but the most organic waste was leaves, banana stems, and so on. Cleaning is done by netting following the current pattern.

According to Yudiarso, the waste season will be found in Bali's waters, especially in the Badung Regency, Bali, such as at Kuta Beach, Canggu and its surroundings in January and February, the peak of the rainy season.

"Usually January and February are the peaks. Previously, the rainy season started this November, then December the rainy season. Starting, the peak is January and February. But this is not the peak already like this (a lot of garbage in the sea)," he said. (*)
