JAKARTA - Phil Collins was seen in public again after several years of facing health problems. The legendary musician was present at Buckingham Palace wearing crutches during the 50th anniversary of The King's Trust.
According to a report by The Mirror, quoted on Monday, May 18, Collins, 75, posed with Sir Rod Stewart, Jill Collins, and Penny Lancaster. He was wearing a black suit and a red tie.
The event was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Charles' charity, The King's Trust, which was previously called The Prince's Trust. A number of famous figures attended, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, George Clooney, and Amal Clooney.
Collins' appearance attracted attention because he rarely appears in public. He was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas that can cause serious complications.
Collins also suffered a spinal injury while on tour with Genesis in 2007. The injury triggered nerve damage in his hands and feet, causing him to stop playing drums and retire from touring in 2022.
In addition, he underwent knee surgery, suffered from type 2 diabetes, and experienced hearing loss due to a viral infection in 2000.
In an interview with Zoe Ball in February, Collins called the past two years a difficult and frustrating time.
He also spoke openly about his alcohol drinking habits which had worsened while living alone in Switzerland after his divorce from Orianne Cevey.
"I'm not the type of person who stays up all night to drink. I drink during the day. But I guess I drank too much and eventually it all caught up with me," he said, quoted by The Mirror.
Although now he has to walk with crutches, Collins has not closed the door to making music again. He said he still has a number of unfinished materials and opens the opportunity to return to the recording studio.
"I've had five operations on my knee. But now I have a functioning knee and I can walk, albeit with crutches. But I'm not dead yet," he said.
Phil Collins is known as one of the big names in pop and rock music in the world. He collected three number one singles in the UK, two Golden Globes, six Brit Awards, and eight Grammy Awards.
Offstage, Collins was married three times. The cost of settling his divorce was reported to be 42 million pounds sterling.
He has five children, including actress Lily Collins, star of Emily in Paris, as well as Nicholas Collins who plays drums and once replaced his father Phil Collins in Genesis.
Collins said he was still proud of his children and his long journey in the music world.
"I want to do it again. I wouldn't miss it for anything," he said.
