JAKARTA - Rumors about the return of the legendary British girl group, Spice Girls, finally met a light. After becoming a hot topic among fans, Melanie Brown aka Mel B, officially clarified the future of the group.
The singer, who is familiarly called Scary Spice, confirmed that the plan for a world reunion tour in the near future is definitely not going to be implemented.
"I can tell you that it (the reunion tour) won't happen. If it does happen, it will be a big surprise for me," Mel B said in a recent interview with Hello!, quoted Sunday, April 5.
The singer, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, explained that he did not want to impose his will on other members. According to him, the agreement to tour must come from the sincere desire of each member without any pressure.
"You can't keep on urging everyone to go on tour if they don't want it. I stopped doing that (urging teammates) when I turned 50," he added.
Despite closing the door on global concerts, Mel B gave a glimmer of hope regarding another project. Instead of performing on stage, the Spice Girls are currently considering releasing a documentary.
The project is reportedly to have a similar concept to Take That's documentary miniseries that was successful on the Netflix platform. This documentary is planned to explore their career journey from the 1990s to becoming a global phenomenon.
However, the realization of the documentary still requires time and understanding between personnel. Mel B emphasized the importance of honesty in the film's narrative later.
"I think we've all been asked and thought about it at one point. However, it must be done in the right way and must be honest. And the fact is, not everyone wants to be honest," he said.
Mel B's statement was in line with what Melanie Chisholm or Mel C said last week. In the Australian radio program, The Smallzy Show, the member who was nicknamed Sporty Spice confirmed that there would be no reunion tour to celebrate this 30th anniversary.
Even so, Mel C remains optimistic that the Spice Girls will do something special in the future. "We want to do something. I don't know when, but I still feel very optimistic and continue to pray that you can all see the Spice Girls together again in the future," he said.
For information, the last appearance of the Spice Girls with the complete five-person formation occurred at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
In 2019, they had a reunion tour in England and Ireland, but at that time Victoria Beckham chose not to join.
Although the official tour plans are still far from reality, the Spice Girls' 30th anniversary celebrations are still pulsating through various cultural appreciations. One of them is The Royal Mint's move which recently launched an official commemorative coin as a form of tribute to the Spice Girls' great contribution to the music industry and popular culture.
