JAKARTA - The legendary British group, Spice Girls, has officially recorded a new history as the first female group to be immortalized in a collection of official commemorative coins by The Royal Mint.
This launch also marks the celebration of their 30 years of journey since their debut in 1996.
The silhouettes of the original five members - Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham - are featured on a special 5-pound coin, complete with their authentic signature graphics.
The design is the work of artist Ffion Rees who worked with Bravado, the brand management division of Universal Music Group, to ensure every detail represented the global "Girl Power" legacy.
The Spice Girls also expressed pride in the achievement, which put them on par with other British music icons such as David Bowie and Elton John.
"It's a huge honor for us to be celebrated by The Royal Mint. 2026 is a special year because we're celebrating 30 years of our debut single and album," the Spice Girls said, quoted by NME, Wednesday, March 4.
"We never imagined being recognized in this way - to be the first girl group to be given our own coin. It's really a great moment for Girl Power," he continued.
Lucy Mackenzie, Director of Digital and Product Concepts at The Royal Mint, confirmed that the Spice Girls are not just a musical group, but a cultural phenomenon that defined the 1990s.
According to him, this collection will be the target of collectors around the world because it is available in various editions, ranging from 'Brilliant Uncirculated' for 18.50 pounds (about Rp370 thousand) to very limited pure gold and silver editions.
"The Spice Girls not only dominated pop music, they shaped the era. Now, for the first time, fans can own a piece of that legacy," Mackenzie said.
"We predict a huge demand from collectors who want to enrich their coin collection or add to their existing merchandise collection," he added.
The momentum of the launch of this coin also triggered speculation about a full Spice Girls reunion. Mel C recently gave a positive signal regarding the possibility of Victoria Beckham returning to the stage for their 30th anniversary tour.
"Victoria wasn't with us on the 2019 stadium tour, so she has to experience that," Mel C optimistically said.
Although Victoria had expressed her difficulty in committing due to her busy schedule in the fashion world, her upload while watching the Oasis concert at Wembley last year sparked speculation about a Spice Girls reunion.
If true, this will be their first appearance since the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
