Megadeth's Ex-Bassist David Ellefson Hates Being Called a Job When Playing Music

JAKARTA - Former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson gives an in-depth look at his philosophy of pursuing a career in the world music industry.

The musician who has been involved for more than four decades emphasized that playing music is not a burden of work, but a gift that should be enjoyed with joy.

Ellefson admitted that he really didn't like the term "working" when referring to musical activities. Because for him the essence of a musician is to play, not just carry out routine tasks that are tiring.

According to the 61-year-old musician, maintaining the mindset as a fan is the main key to ensuring that the "magic" of music does not just disappear.

He also recalled his childhood when he was 10 years old when he was so impressed by bands like Kiss and Sweet, until finally the bass instrument "found" him.

Ellefson argues that when a musician loses the sense of enthusiasm as a fan, then music becomes a heavy job with very long working hours.

"I mean, what else is there? It's the best job in the world. And that's why I hate when people call this a job. We play - we don't work, we play," Ellefson said in an interview with Carlos Alberto Velazquez, quoted by Blabbermouth, Thursday, January 22.

Ellefson's openness to fans has also been in the spotlight. Unlike some rock stars who build thick walls with tight security, he chooses to remain grounded and responds to fan letters personally.

For him, the interaction is a reminder that the work he creates through his talent has had a real impact on other people's lives. He believes that what an artist gives to the public will come back to him, so being aggressive with excessive security will only invite similar aggression from the surrounding environment.

"Maybe I have changed their lives, hopefully for the better. But my songs, my music, my skills, the talent that God gave me, have had an impact on someone," he concluded.

Although he is no longer a part of Megadeth since his dismissal in 2021, Ellefson remains a very productive figure in the global music scene. He is still active in various projects.
