JAKARTA - Global star from Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny, has to face legal problems related to alleged copyright infringement.
The man with the real name Benito Martínez Ocasio was sued for 16 million US dollars (Rp254 billion) by a woman named Tainaly Serrano Rivera, who felt that her voice was copied without permission in two hit songs by the rapper.
In the lawsuit filed in a Puerto Rican court, Rivera claimed that his voice was featured in the song "Solo de Mi" released on the album "X 100pre" (2018) and the song "EoO" from the album "Debí Tirar Más Fotos" (2025).
On both tracks, a voice can be heard saying, "Mira, puñeta, no me quiten el perreo" (Listen, bitch, don't take away my shake.")
Rivera explained that the audio recording was made in 2018 for producer Bad Bunny, Roberto Rosado alias La Paciencia, who was his classmate.
However, Rivera's legal team insisted that the purpose of the audio recording was never explained transparently to their client at the time.
According to a Billboard report, Rivera was never told that his identity and voice would be used and exploited commercially for the financial benefit of others.
"No compensation of any kind was discussed," Rivera's legal team said, quoted on Monday, January 12.
They also added that no contract or agreement was signed, and no license or authorization was given by Rivera for the use of the voice.
In addition to use in studio recordings, Rivera also accused Bad Bunny and his collaborators of misappropriating the vocal sample during a series of residency concerts in San Juan, last year.
This lawsuit targets three main parties, namely Bad Bunny, La Paciencia, and the record label Rimas Entertainment.
Rivera claimed the use of his voice was a clear violation of Puerto Rico's publicity rights law.
Interestingly, Rolling Stone's report said that Rivera was represented by lawyers Jose Marxuach Fagot and Joanna Bocanegra Ocasio, the same legal team that had previously sued Bad Bunny in 2023 on behalf of the rapper's ex-girlfriend, Carliz De La Cruz Hernández, with a similar case.
Until now, similar cases involving his ex-girlfriend are still in the legal process in state courts after being taken to federal court.
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny's party has not given an official statement regarding this latest lawsuit worth hundreds of billions of rupiah.
