JAKARTA - The prestigious music awards for the Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards have returned to the spotlight in line with the announcement of nominations involving many big names.
A number of works that go back and forth on social media also enliven the list of nominations, namely Garam & Madu ( Chestache) and Tabola Bale, which raises big questions about how far virality on platforms like TikTok affects the judging process.
Responding to this curiosity, the Chairperson of the 2025 AMI Awards Foundation, Candra Darusman, gave a firm explanation. According to him, popularity on social media cannot be ignored, but it is not the only indicator determining a work worthy of being nominated.
"It is not directly needed in the end," said Candra Darusman at a press conference in Senayan, Central Jakarta, Thursday, November 13.
He explained that AMI members themselves are music lovers who daily follow the development of trends that are being discussed on social media. This makes them exposed indirectly to these viral songs.
"So indeed AMI there are several members. They also follow what is trending on social media," said Candra.
"It is undeniable that AMI members are exposed daily (viral songs)," he continued.

Candra clearly explained, although the AMI Awards did not deny the connection between the assessment and the virality of social media, this was only a small part of the consideration.
Music quality remains the main standard, even for the music category that is not in direct contact with online popularity.
"Yes, again, AMI doesn't just look that way, but there are also keroncong categories and others, and we want to respect that," he said.
"So, it's no longer viral, but more about the quality of that," said Candra, stressing that this award is based on artistic quality, not just popularity in cyberspace.
The holding of the 28th AMI Awards will peak on Wednesday, November 19. The award peak night which will be enlivened by a number of top Indonesian musicians is scheduled to be broadcast live from Ciputra Artpreneur, South Jakarta, through the official YouTube channel Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards.
