Kim Thayil Introduces His First Memoar About Soundgarden Titled A Screaming Life

JAKARTA - Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil has just announced the launch of his first memoir entitled A Screaming Life. The book is planned to be published in May 2026.

In his memoir, Thayil not only tells Soundgarden, but also documents how the traces of immigrants' backgrounds form a band, from a simple start that realizes grunge in punk clubs in Seattle to their honorable status today as rock icons.

Through his personal Instagram account, the 65-year-old guitarist gave a detailed description of the essence of his writing.

This tells my story as an American immigrant son who grows up in Chicago. Then, with another American immigrant son, Hiro Yamamoto, " wrote Thayil starting his explanation, citing an upload caption, Thursday, October 30.

"We traveled to Seattle as an idealist young man, engage in an underground and independent subculture, and connect with Chris Cornell to form a Soundgarden," he continued.

The most interesting point based on the synopsis circulating is the recognition that Soundgarden was formed by the diverse backgrounds of its founders for which India's Thayil heritage and Japan's background from Yamamoto added a unique dimension to the band's identity "influence not only their music but also their experience in industry."

The synopsis also promises readers the story of how Soundgarden " faces victory and challenges on the way to their meteoric increase.

For information, the announcement of this memoir comes ahead of the historic moment for Soundgarden. The band is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2025 on November 8.

They will be juxtaposed with other big names such as The White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, and OutKast.
