JAKARTA - SZA managed to break the longest record as the leader of the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart through the SOS album. STANDing for 38 weeks (in a row), the album surpassed Michael Jackson's previous record.
The King of Pop six decades ago recorded a difficult-to-matched feat through Thriller (1983-84) which lasted 37 weeks. In the announcement of the June 7 chart, SZA officially surpassed it.
According to Lumite data, SOS collected 47,000 album equivalent units in the US in the week 23-29 May up 2% from the previous week. Since its release, the album has lasted 129 weeks on the chart and has never come out of the top 10.
SOS, SZA's second studio album, was released in December 2022 as a continuation of her debut, Ctrl (2017). This album immediately topped the chart and gave birth to hits such as Kill Bill (21 weeks in number one Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs) and Snooze (13 weeks in second place).
Its popularity has skyrocketed again in December 2024 with the release of the Deluxe version of LANA, adding more than 10 songs, including Saturn and 30 for 30.

Changes In Metodology And Streaming Domination
Since 2017, Billboard has integrated digital song streaming and sales data into chart calculations, making the album last longer thanks to streaming consistency. Previously, this chart only relied on physical sales.
This change sparked a number of new records. For example, Thriller had held a record for 76 weeks in the top 10 (1983-84). However, in recent years, all six albums "all 2012 or after" have surpassed that achievement.
With the trend of long albums and many reliable songs, the popularity of an album can now last longer on the chart. SOS is proof.
