David Johansen Derita Cancer Stadium Empat, Family Looking For Donations For Medical Costs

JAKARTA - The founder of the New York Dolls punk-rock pioneer band, David Johansen, is reported to have stage four cancer, brain tumor, and spinal cord. In order to undergo treatment, the family decided to apply for financial assistance through the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

Meanwhile, Johansen was diagnosed with cancer in 2020. At first, the 75-year-old singer tried to keep her illness a secret, but the heavy financial burden made her have to be open to her condition.

Johansen's health condition was exacerbated when he fell and broke his back in two places in November 2024, which forced him to undergo surgery. Even though the procedure was successful, he still lay in bed and was helpless.

"We've been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, meeting friends and family, and continuing to live life, but falling ill the day after Thanksgiving really took us to a completely new level of weakness," David Johansen said, citing Variety, Thursday, February 13.

"This is the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. I've never asked for help, but it's an emergency. Thank you," he continued.

Meanwhile, her daughter, Leah Hennessey, testified that Johansen had not played music for the past five years. She said the most pressing need for her father was full-time care, physical therapy, and funding for her daily expenses.

"With professional special care, we hope David can move back and be independent," said Hennessey.

To help with the recovery of Johansen's family, Sweet Relief has launched David Johansen Fund. They also offer a special T-shirt with Johansen's picture, with all the results to be donated for treatment.
