British rock band Bassist Pulp Steve Mackey passed away on Thursday morning local time.

In an online post, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker confirmed the 56-year-old musician's departure.

Our beloved friend & bass player Steve Mackey passed away this morning. Our thoughts with his family & loved ones. Steve's photo comes from when Pulp toured in South America in 2012," Jarvis wrote on social media.

We had a day off & Steve suggested that we climb in the Andes. So we did it and it was a truly magical experience. Much more magical than staring at hotel room walls all day long (which I might do otherwise).

"Steve made things happen. In his life & in the band & we really want to think that he's back in the mountains now, at the next stage of his adventure. Be careful on the way, Steve. We hope to catch up with you one day. All our love xx."

Steve's cause of death has not been confirmed but his wife, styling Katie Grand, has revealed that he has been hospitalized in recent months.
