JAKARTA - Nissan Sakura as the best-selling electric car in Japan is now getting a slight refresh to maintain competitiveness in the kei segment, especially after major players from China such as BYD started to enliven the market. This small model was first introduced in 2022 as a production version of Nissan's IMk concept which was introduced three years earlier.

The most noticeable change is visible on the front, Nissan redesigned the fascia with a body-colored grille reminiscent of the Nissan Leaf. The design is combined with a new bumper that has more pronounced corners and more prominent vertical elements on the side.

Meanwhile, the LED headlights, body profile, to the back are still maintained as before. Interestingly, this update is only pinned on the X and G variants, while the S variant as the basic model still uses the old design.

Reported by Carscoops, Monday, April 20, the color choices are now fresher through the presence of a new nuance called "Minamono Sakura", which is inspired by cherry blossoms floating on the water. This color is combined with copper accents and sterling silver roofs, creating a unique three-color look, especially on the highest variant of Sakura G.

Entering the cabin, the appearance is still familiar, but Nissan has attached a number of functional improvements. The drive mode button is now placed more ergonomically, while the passenger side has an additional cup holder.

The 7-inch digital instrument panel and 9-inch infotainment screen are still maintained, but the USB Type-C port is now repositioned to the bottom of the center console. For the X variant, some features that were previously optional are now standard, such as the Intelligent Around View Monitor, heated front seats, to the steering wheel heater.

This car is also equipped with additional features such as automatic locking and opening, rear seat reminder, charging port locking system, and 1500W AC outlet option. In terms of performance, Sakura still relies on one electric motor with 63 hp (47 kW / 64 PS) power and 195 Nm of torque.

The 20 kWh lithium-ion battery is still used, with a cruising range of up to 180 km based on the WLTC cycle. This updated electric kei car can already be ordered in Japan, with the first deliveries scheduled to start in the summer.

Prices offered start at Rp264 million for the X variant to Rp324 million for the G variant. With the Japanese clean energy subsidy of 580,000 yen or around Rp62 million, the initial price could drop to around 1,870,000 yen, or Rp202 million.

Nissan said this model has been the best-selling electric car in Japan for four consecutive years, with sales reaching 14,093 units throughout 2025. Competition in this segment is also getting tighter with the arrival of domestic rivals such as Mitsubishi eK X EV, Honda N-One e:, Honda N-Van e:, and new models from China, BYD Racco.
