JAKARTA - BYD is again expanding its electric vehicle lineup by introducing a new SUV called Great Tang. The name may sound unusual, but this model is built on the latest electric platform owned by the Chinese automotive giant.

The Great Tang is set to compete in the premium SUV segment against models such as the Zeekr 9X and IM LS9, as well as challenging global players such as the Volvo EX90 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. The model first appeared in Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology documents earlier this year, before finally being revealed in full.

In terms of size, the Great Tang is even larger than the Denza B8. This SUV has a length of 5,302 mm, a width of 1,999 mm, a height of 1,800 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,130 mm. BYD places it as part of the latest premium line in the Dynasty family.

In appearance, the design looks elegant, especially through the combination of striking two-tone red and silver colors. The front fascia carries BYD's signature design language with an elongated light bar, a black lower grille, and vertical headlights that are neatly integrated with the front of the vehicle.

But the main attraction of the Great Tang is not only in its appearance, but the technology it carries. Launching Carscoops, Monday, March 9, this SUV uses BYD's latest Super e platform and the second generation Blade battery.

The company claims the battery can be charged from 10 percent to 97 percent in just 9 minutes, as long as it is connected to a 1,500 kW charging station owned by BYD. The technology is made possible thanks to the use of a 1,000-volt electric architecture.

BYD has not revealed the battery capacity used, but a number of information regarding the drive system has been confirmed. The single motor version will be available with 402 hp or 496 hp. Meanwhile, for those who want higher performance, there is a dual motor configuration with power reaching 784 hp.

For the size of a large family SUV, efficiency and mileage are important factors. Even though the weight reaches 2,970 kg, BYD claims the rear motor variant can travel up to 590 miles or about 950 km in the CLTC cycle.

The more powerful dual-motor version has a range of around 528 miles or 850 km on a single charge. Getting inside the cabin, the Great Tang offers a 2+2+3 seating configuration designed for family comfort. The interior is filled with premium features, including a large infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard accompanied by a special screen for the driver and front passenger.

Other features embedded include a wireless mobile charger, an integrated refrigerator, and a folding screen in the ceiling for rear passenger entertainment during long trips. In the Chinese market, this electric SUV is expected to be priced slightly above 400,000 yuan, or Rp985 million.
