JAKARTA - Malaysia has the latest PHEV MPV, with the official launch of the GWM Wey G9 ready to become a strong challenger to the Toyota Alphard to Denza D9.

Quoting from the Paultan website, Friday, January 30, the GWM Wey G9 is sold in Malaysia in one variant only, at a price of 269,800 ringgit or a range of Rp. 1.14 billion.

The MPV is locally assembled (CKD) at the EP Manufacturing (EPMB) plant in Pegoh, Melaka, with the first unit coming off the production line last month.

In detail, the variant that is present in the country is a seven-seat model (2-2-3 layout) with a standard wheelbase measuring 5,050 mm long, 1,985 mm wide, and 1,900 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,085 mm and a ground clearance of 155 mm.

The Wey G9 is powered by the latest Hi4 Intelligent Hybrid 4WD system from the car manufacturer, in this case a variation of the basic Hi4 called Hi4 Performance, which is a four-speed series or parallel hybrid transmission system with dual motors designed for medium to large sized platforms.

The system consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 150 PS (148 hp, or 110 kW) at 5,500 to 6,000 rpm and 240 Nm from 1,800 to 4,000 rpm, which is paired with a special four-speed hybrid transmission (DHT). This system integrates an electric motor of 109 PS (107 hp, or 80 kW) and 170 Nm to drive the front wheels, with another motor of 184 PS (181 hp, or 135 kW) and 232 Nm at the rear.

The combined power and torque for the G9 is 442 PS (436 hp or 325 kW) and 642 Nm, slightly lower than the 458 PS and 644 Nm found in China. The performance figures for this MPV, which weighs 2,803 kg, include an acceleration time of 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h.

The battery for the Wey G9 in Malaysia is a 44.2 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit, which is smaller in capacity compared to the 51.55 kWh unit for the Chinese market. Despite its smaller capacity, this battery is able to give the MPV a range of 170 km (based on NEDC standards) with pure electric power only, which is equivalent to about 145 km (based on WLTP standards). With a 58-liter fuel tank, the total mileage is claimed to be up to 1,000 km (NEDC).
