JAKARTA - The BYD Denza B5 plug-in hybrid SUV has achieved a brilliant achievement after receiving the highest safety rating, five stars. The crash test and safety evaluation was conducted by ANCAP Australia.
Reported by Carnewschina, Friday, December 19, this model is considered to show strong performance in various testing scenarios. In addition, it confirms Denza's position as a serious challenger in the premium off-road SUV segment.
Known in China as Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5, this SUV was first introduced in 2023 as a hybrid-powered off-road vehicle built on BYD's DMO platform. Featuring a ladder-frame body design, Bao 5 has dimensions of 4,890 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, and 1,920 mm high with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.
The ground clearance can be increased by up to 310 mm thanks to the hydraulic suspension system, making it an attractive option for adventure enthusiasts. The Denza B5 power comes from a 1.5-liter engine combined with two electric motors, producing a maximum output of 505 kW or 650 hp.
This large power is prepared to conquer the heavy terrain without sacrificing energy efficiency. Australia is one of the main markets for models sold under the name Denza B5 outside China.
Recently, ANCAP released the results of the evaluation of the SUV with a very competitive overall score. In the Child Passenger Protection segment, Denza B5 received a score of 95 percent thanks to its good performance in the frontal offset and side impact tests.
However, ANCAP noted that there were obstacles to installing certain booster seats in the middle of the back. Meanwhile, the Adult Passenger Protection segment recorded a value of 86 percent.
The cabin structure is considered stable during the collision. However, the front structure of the car got a note because it was considered to potentially increase the risk of injury for passengers of other vehicles in a frontal offset collision, thus triggering a penalty.
In the Vulnerable Road User Protection category, this SUV scored 74 percent. The performance of automatic emergency braking (AEB) is good in most conditions, but the AEB Backover test is considered less satisfactory.
In addition, the area of the windshield pillar and the edge of the engine hood shows less optimal protection for pedestrians in a collision scenario. Finally, Denza B5 bagged 78 percent in the Safety Assistance category, reinforcing its positive track record as a modern vehicle that prioritizes active safety.
Australia will be the first market to launch the Denza B5 as a premium off-road SUV from BYD. This model is planned to be available in 2026 and immediately target a competitive market that has been dominated by Japanese and European brands.
