JAKARTA - Since its debut in 1974, Jeep Cherokee (mainly the XJ model produced from 1984 to 2001) has built a reputation as a tough, versatile, and iconic SUV.

The XJ model is known as the pioneer of a modern SUV for combining Jeep's distinctive offroad capabilities with a more practical unibody design for everyday use, which later becomes industry standard. Globally, Cherokee has been sold in many countries and has loyal fans, especially among off-road and adventure lovers.

The name "Cherokee" itself has been used in several generations of Jeep vehicles, including the modern (2014-present) KL model, which continues to defend Jeep brand identity as a symbol of resilience and freedom. Its reputation is reinforced by Jeep's long history as a brand linked to adventure and resilience, coupled with the recognition of pop culture and a strong fan community around the world.

However, after being absent from the market since early 2023, Jeep has again enlivened the medium size crossover segment with the presence of a 2026 model from Jeep Cherokee which is completely redesigned. The display has not only changed, but also brings great surprises that will only be available in the hybrid variant, a bold move that promises extraordinary fuel efficiency.

This latest Jeep Cherokee is the first non-clunk hybrid (non-plug-in) model from Jeep. Unlike the 4xe model on Wrangler or Grand Cherokee which can be recharged, this Cherokee combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor that powers the system automatically.

For the price, quoted from Autoweek, Friday, August 22, in the United States starting from 36,995 US dollars (equivalent to Rp604 million), Cherokee 2026 is ready to regain its market share with a hybrid strategy that focuses on efficiency and comfort, without leaving a solid character of Jeep. The delivery of this model is scheduled to begin by the end of this year.

Small Machines, Big Performance

Instead of using a large engine, Jeep planted a 1.6-liter four-cylindrical engine which is the result of adaptation of the "Prince" machine jointly developed by BMW and PSA Peugeot CitroZin. This machine, combined with two electric motors and 1.08-kWh batteries, produces a combined power of up to 210 hp and 230 lb-ft torque.

However, the most interesting thing is its efficiency. According to Micky Bly, SVP and Stellantis Global Mobilization System Head, this latest Cherokee is capable of achieving a combined 37 MPG fuel consumption (about 15.7 km/l) and a total range of more than 500 miles (about 800 km) with one full tank. This figure far exceeds the efficiency of the previous Cherokee model.

Wider, More Sturdy

In addition to efficiency, Cherokee dimension 2026 also experienced a drastic increase. Built on the new Stellantis STLA Large platform, the car now has a 113-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 188.1 inches, making it bigger than its main competitors such as Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.

This increase in dimensions also has an impact on the cabin and cargo space. The baggage space behind the second row increased by 33 percent, reaching 33.6 cubic feet, and offering towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds, the equivalent of some of its strongest competitors.

This latest Cherokee comes with a variety of advanced features on a standard basis. Each trim will be equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster screen, 12.3-inch infotainment screen with User 5, Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, as well as various safety features such as Level 2 Active Driving Assist, automatic emergency braking, and detection of pedestrians/cyclists.
