Guru Guru Gokil Becomes The First Indonesian Film To Show On Netflix In The Middle Of A Pandemic

JAKARTA - The COVID-19 pandemic still closes a number of industries including cinemas. As a result, during the past 4 months, the public has not been able to watch the latest released films from both outside and within the country.

Shocking news arrived on Wednesday, July 15, 2020. BASE Entertainment as the production house announced that the film Guru Guru Gokil will be released for the first time through Netflix's OTT (over the top) streaming service. This film is the first Indonesian film to choose a live release on a streaming service. Previously, this film was scheduled to air in 2020.

Guru Guru Gokil is a BASE Entertainment film produced by actress Dian Sastrowardoyo. This film tells the story of the struggle of Taat (Gading Marten) who becomes a substitute teacher at a school because of a situation. Friendships with teachers at school change his thinking about success.

Apart from Gading Marten, Dian Sastrowardoyo, Faradina Mufti, Boris Bokir, Kevin Ardilova, and Shakira Jasmine also played in this film directed by Sammaria Sari Simanjuntak. The manuscript was written by Rahabi Mandra who previously wrote Trinity: The Desperate Traveler and Night Bus.

This collaboration was received positively by both Netflix and BASE Entertainment. Through Guru Guru Gokil, this film can be Indonesia's way of introducing quality stories around the world. Moreover, this film will be broadcast via Netflix in 190 countries with 17 languages.

This strategy is the first in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, this step was taken by Universal for the film Trolls World Tour, Little Big Pictures with Time To Hunt, Warner Bros. with SCOOB !, and Paramount Pictures with SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run.

Before Guru Gokil, there was the film The Night Comes For Us that aired on Netflix in 2018. The difference is that the film was released long before the pandemic.
