JAKARTA - Director David Ayer uploaded a lengthy article about his point of view on the 2016 film Suicide Squad which he directed.
Entitled "My Turn", the letter contains Ayer's rejection of the studio version edit and how it is not his own.
“The studio version is not my film. Read back. And my version isn't Director's Cut (which was worked on) 10 weeks - it's maturely edited by Lee Smith with great work from John Gilroy. Steven Price's brilliant scoring without a single radio song in it," Ayer said today, Friday, July 30.
David Ayer also explained that several people had seen his version of Suicide Squad but he explained "If someone says he's seen it, they really haven't."
“I put my life in for the Suicide Squad. I made something good - My version is an emotional journey with some 'bad guys' who interrupt a theme that resonates with my soul.”
The reason why he never talks about his version of Suicide Squad is that he doesn't want to keep his mouth shut from criticism from various parties. “I kept quiet and went through a tsunami of personal criticism. Why? That's what I've done my whole life."
David Ayer's lengthy post became a response after Tim Grierson of Screen Daily wrote a tweet about James Gunn's upcoming film The Suicide Squad. They compared Gunn's version to Ayer's and wrote, "David Ayer really should get rid of that director's cut idea."
Despite the comparisons, David Ayer expressed full support for James Gunn and all parties involved.
“I am proud of James and look forward to the success to come. I support WB and am glad the franchise is getting what they need."
Concluding his letter, David Ayer said he would not discuss his version of Suicide Squad publicly.
When it was first released in 2016, David Ayer's Suicide Squad film received negative criticism from various parties. Not a few who think the film looks different from the trailer which is very dark. In addition, the soundtrack that fills the film is dominated by a row of rap and hip hop songs.
A few years later, a source mentioned the Warner Bros. production house. made several changes to the film ahead of its release including editing parts of the film.
In 2020, DC fans briefly released the hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut asking Warner Bros. to release an actual edit made by David Ayer.
Meanwhile, The Suicide Squad will premiere on HBO Max on August 6.
